When Music Moves Education, It Touches The Soul
Some people enjoy listening to tunes. Others feel it on a deep emotional and spiritual level and literally need the musical expression of choice in order to keep their mental balance. It can be difficult to really explain to someone who doesn’t need music what it is like to be deprived or without during important moments. Creating the sounds that express ideas, thoughts, and emotion is simply something that some of us were more or less born to.
Of course, whether you opt for the piano or the Fender acoustic electric guitar isn’t really relevant to the passion. The intricacies of the Ibanez electric guitar are more important than the look of any black electric guitar. The strings of a violin or the wail of a sax can all play a role in the spiritual need to move through the music.
Is it hokey? Is it a game that many teenagers and young adults play in their head as they fantasize about being rock stars? Or is it something deeper and more meaningful than that? For those on the outside it can be hard to tell.
If you’ve ever stood on the sidelines and watched from a distance as a true musician caresses a tune, you are likely to see something powerful come over them. If you pat them on the head with a patronizing tone, you are the one that has missed out on the magic.
With every note there is a painstaking process that each musician has gone through. Some have been more privileged than others, but each has had to wrestle with their dreams and aspirations in a world that is anything but supportive.
This only happens when there is support. Financial and educational support are part of lighting up these dreams and watching inspired student turn away from violence or gangs in favor of their instrument. When you take the time to truly invest in the promise of a musician, you also encourage the advancement of mathematical and science, as well as an increase in the reading comprehension level.
The universal language of music has spoken and too many dreams have been shut down. Impractical dreams are not ours to judge. When we take music out of schools we shut down the passion that drives a child forward, away from the negative influences of life, and straight toward their own set of stars.
