Producing Your First Play
So you want to produce a play or musical?. This article lists the basics in starting your own production.
To begin with, choose a simple play. Whether it is a drama or musical try and choose a play with limited amount of actors, especially important if this is your first production. If you are using someone else’s script always get there permission first.
Next, calculate your budget. Normally grants are rarely given on small, first time productions, so decide whether you will fund the play or an executive producer instead.
Now it is time to look for other key members for your production crew. You need to find people specialised in set and costume, promotions, directing and producing to name a few. Finding a good stage manager, with good organising skills, is important and will greatly benefit you.
Locating the right place for your play will depend greatly on your budget. Community centres and public parks are good if your on a tight budget. Commercial theatres are more expensive and can be booked out for months. Whatever place you choose, insure the sound and lighting is adequate.
Once you have read the script and know what characters are required, then it is time to cast for your play. You can hold castings or you may already have actors in mind for certain roles.
Now you have your play, cast, production team and budget it’s now time for rehearsals! The rehearsal place that you choose is important. Spaces should be adequately lit, ideally be mirrored and have sprung floors. These floors are important for dance rehearsals to avoid injury.

It is very important to rehearse your play over and over again. Opting for the right rehearsal place will make rehearsal less tiresome and much more enjoyable. Make sure all rehearsals are attended by all the cast. Remember the saying ‘Practice makes perfect!’
